Cumming is approximately 39 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta via GA-400. In light traffic, the drive to downtown takes about 45 to 50 minutes. During weekday peak commute hours, travel times can extend to 70 minutes or more, particularly approaching the I-285 interchange. The MARTA North Springs rail station is about 20 miles south of Cumming on GA-400, and an express bus route connects the Cumming Park-and-Ride to downtown Atlanta.
Lake Lanier is a 38,000-acre reservoir with nearly 700 miles of shoreline, created in the 1950s by the construction of Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River. It supplies drinking water for much of metro Atlanta and serves as a major recreation destination. Swimming is permitted at designated beach areas, including Mary Alice Park and several other Corps of Engineers-managed parks on the Cumming side of the lake. The Cumming City Center, a recent redevelopment, adds outdoor dining and live music venues. The Sawnee Mountain Preserve, with hiking trails and panoramic views, is just north of downtown.
Cumming is named for Colonel William Cumming, a distinguished officer who served in the War of 1812. The city was incorporated in 1834 and has served as the Forsyth County seat since the county's founding. The historic 1905 Forsyth County Courthouse, now operated as a museum, stands in downtown Cumming and reflects the city's longstanding role as the governmental center of the county.
