    Railroad Crossroads in Crawford County

    Listings in Roberta, GA

Welcome to Roberta, Crawford County's largest town, a U.S. 80 and 341 crossroads named for a railroad pioneer's daughter.

Roberta is the largest municipality in Crawford County, a rural county in central Georgia's Piedmont. The city sits at the junction of U.S. Route 80 and U.S. Route 341, about twenty-six miles west of Macon, and counted 813 residents in the 2020 census. Knoxville, the county seat, lies about a mile to the east and remains an unincorporated community, so Roberta functions as the county's commercial center even though the courthouse stands in Knoxville. Crawford County is one of Georgia's smaller counties, and Roberta anchors its commerce. The town grew out of the railroad. In the late nineteenth century, residents of Knoxville migrated toward the new rail line, and the settlement that formed around the depot was called New Knoxville. Hiram David McCrary, who allowed the railroad to use part of his land, was given naming rights and chose Roberta, for his seven-year-old daughter. McCrary became the community's first elected mayor, opened its first general store, co-owned its first motel, and served as tax collector and railroad station agent. The town of Roberta was incorporated in 1890–91, and the city of Roberta was formally incorporated in 1910. Knoxville, founded in the 1820s along the stagecoach and telegraph route from Washington, D.C., to New Orleans, gradually lost its population to the railroad town a mile away and surrendered its municipal charter in 1995, leaving Roberta as Crawford County's principal incorporated community. Today Roberta serves as the hub of Crawford County, which had about 12,130 residents in 2020. The county remains rural and agricultural, and Roberta's position at a U.S. highway crossroads gives it a steady commercial role. Its single countywide school district, proximity to Macon, and quiet small-town rhythm define daily life, while the city's railroad-era origins remain visible in its layout and its name.

    City Guide

    About Roberta

    Real Estate & Housing

Housing in Roberta is modest and overwhelmingly single-family, reflecting the city's small-town, agricultural setting. Older homes near the U.S. 80 and 341 crossroads reflect the early-twentieth-century railroad era, while ranch-style and newer construction spread across the city's small residential streets. Larger lots and rural acreage begin quickly at the city's edge, where Crawford County opens into farmland, pasture, and pine woods. The market favors established, individually built homes over large subdivisions, keeping housing accessible relative to Macon and other Georgia metro areas.

    Neighborhoods

Roberta is a compact city organized around the junction of U.S. 80 and U.S. 341. The blocks nearest the crossroads hold the city's older homes, churches, and civic buildings, while residential streets extend a short distance in each direction before giving way to open county land. Knoxville, the historic county seat, sits about a mile east and preserves Crawford County's courthouse heritage. Rather than formal subdivisions, Roberta's neighborhoods are defined by a handful of quiet streets, with the surrounding countryside providing the larger setting.

    Lifestyle in Roberta

Daily life in Roberta centers on its role as Crawford County's largest town. The city hosts the county's schools, businesses, and public services, and its churches and civic groups anchor community life. The area's identity is rooted in the railroad era and in the surrounding farm country, and residents value the quiet, familiar pace of a small Piedmont town. Macon, about twenty-six miles east, provides the region's larger shopping, health care, and entertainment, while the peach-growing countryside of neighboring Peach County adds to the region's agricultural character.

    Schools & Education

Roberta is served by the Crawford County School District, the countywide public school system whose facilities, including Crawford County Elementary, are based in the city. The district operates the county's elementary, middle, and high schools and serves families from Roberta and the surrounding rural communities. Because the county seat of Knoxville is unincorporated, Roberta functions as the educational and administrative center of the county, giving the city's schools a central role in regional life.

    Getting Around

Roberta sits at the crossroads of U.S. Route 80 and U.S. Route 341. U.S. 80 runs east toward Macon and west toward the Columbus area, while U.S. 341 carries traffic north and south through the Georgia countryside. The city lies about twenty-six miles west of Macon, a drive of roughly forty minutes that connects residents to the region's principal employment and amenities. The railroad that first gave Roberta its start no longer anchors the economy, but the two U.S. highways keep the city a genuine crossroads for central Georgia.

    Parks & Recreation

Recreation in and around Roberta is shaped by Crawford County's rural Piedmont landscape. The surrounding farmland, creeks, and pine woods support hunting, fishing, and quiet country drives, and the city's parks and ball fields host youth sports and community gatherings. Crawford County's small scale keeps outdoor recreation close at hand, while Macon, about twenty-six miles east, offers riverfront trails, museums, and larger cultural attractions. The annual rhythms of a rural Georgia county — from harvest seasons to school and church events — anchor the community calendar.
