    Northwest Georgia Mill Town

    Listings in Trion, GA

Welcome to Trion, a Chattooga County mill town founded on the first cotton mill in northwest Georgia and still shaped by the textile industry.

Trion is a town in Chattooga County, in the far northwest corner of Georgia near the Alabama state line, set in the foothills of the Appalachians. The 2020 census counted 1,960 residents, making Trion the second-largest incorporated community in the county. Its history is inseparable from the textile industry that built it. The town takes its name from the trio of founders behind Trion Factory — Andrew P. Allgood, his father-in-law Spencer S. Marsh, and William K. Briers. Established as the first cotton mill in northwest Georgia, Trion Factory gave the settlement its economic foundation, and the community incorporated around it in the mid-nineteenth century. Though the original mill burned in 1875, it was rebuilt and passed through a series of owners — the Trion Company, Riegel Textile, and Mount Vernon Mills — that sustained the town's identity. The community has long been associated with denim production and is sometimes called the denim capital of the world. That industrial heritage shaped a distinctive townscape: a compact downtown, a mill village of worker housing, and civic buildings clustered near the factory. Trion also operates its own independent Trion City Schools district, an arrangement that reflects the town's historic self-sufficiency and civic pride. Today Trion remains a working-class, close-knit community where the mill continues to employ local residents. Its location places residents within reach of Summerville, the county seat, as well as Rome to the south and Chattanooga, Tennessee, to the north. The surrounding ridges and valleys of northwest Georgia provide the scenic backdrop for a town defined by more than a century of textile making.

    About Trion

    Real Estate & Housing

Trion's housing stock reflects its mill-town origins. The original mill village consists of modest, closely spaced frame houses built for factory workers, along with early twentieth-century bungalows and brick cottages near downtown. Newer ranch homes and manufactured housing appear on the town's edges. The compact grid means small lots and short blocks, while surrounding rural land offers larger parcels. The inventory skews older and affordable, with much of it owner-occupied and tied to the town's textile history.

    Neighborhoods

Trion is organized around the mill and its main street rather than distinct named districts. The mill village forms the historic core, with worker housing clustered near the factory, while the downtown holds the town's commercial buildings and civic institutions. Residential blocks radiate outward into the surrounding foothills, and the adjacent community of Summerville provides the county's commercial and governmental center. The result is a single, walkable town with the factory at its heart.

    Lifestyle in Trion

Life in Trion is shaped by the mill that gave the town its name. Generations of families have worked in the textile industry, and the community retains a strong blue-collar, close-knit identity. The compact downtown and mill village foster walkable neighborhoods and long-standing social ties, while school athletics and church life anchor the calendar. Residents drive to nearby Summerville, the county seat, or to Rome and Chattanooga for larger shopping and services, while enjoying the slower pace of a small mountain-foot hill town.

    Schools & Education

Trion operates its own Trion City Schools district, an independent system serving students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve. The district includes Trion Elementary School and Trion High School, and it has historically earned strong marks for a small-town system. This independent arrangement, unusual for a community of Trion's size, keeps schools closely tied to local identity. Families should confirm enrollment zones and programs directly with the district.

    Getting Around

Trion sits near U.S. Highway 27, which runs north toward Chattanooga and south toward Rome, and county roads connect it to Summerville, the Chattooga County seat. Interstate 75 is reached via Rome or Calhoun to the east. Daily travel is car-dependent, with many residents commuting to Summerville, Rome, or the Dalton and Chattanooga areas for work. The nearest commercial airports are in Chattanooga and Atlanta, roughly an hour north and two hours south respectively.

    Parks & Recreation

Recreation in and around Trion draws on northwest Georgia's mountain foothills. The nearby Chattahoochee National Forest offers hiking, camping, and scenic drives, and James H. "Sloppy" Floyd State Park near Summerville provides a lake, fishing, and trails within a short drive. The Chattooga River, famed for paddling and trout fishing, flows through the broader region, and local school athletics and town events fill out the community calendar. Rome and Chattanooga add larger cultural and outdoor destinations.
